ABOUT US

who we are

Growing up, our family of 7 would load our 1995 Land Rover Discovery and travel up the Eastern Seaboard from Atlanta to the coast of Maine for our annual summer vacation. Packed to the gills, we literally had to shoehorn ourselves inside. But our trusty Disco drove like a tank. It took us unscathed over mountain passes, torrential thunderstorms and gave us the feeling like we were going on a safari every time we got inside.

Like many kids from the 90’s, Land Rover’s Camel Trophy events grabbed our imagination and our sense of adventure with these vehicles. With the introduction of the Defender NAS (North American Spec) back into the US market in 1994, the 90’s are considered the “golden age” of the Land Rover brand. Truly, it’s a unique time in history where technology met simplicity, ruggedness and comfort. In a world that is becoming increasingly complex, it’s hard to beat the simplicity of solid axles, coil springs and all time four wheel drive. Combine that with the ease of maintenance and the traction of a mountain goat, you’ve got a great candidate for a nostalgic SUV that is fun to drive and take care of.

We’re 3 brothers who turned our passion for off-road adventure into Lewis Expedition Co. and our North American shop, Lewis Offroad. We have over 20 years experience building and traveling in vintage Land Rovers and Jeeps.

Our name, Lewis Expedition Co., is a nod to our Lewis – Welsh family background and the spirit of exploration epitomized by the Lewis & Clark Expedition from 1804-1806.

Whether you’re admiring one of the Rovers in our inventory or you’re interested in a custom build, owning a Land Rover is a “kid’s dream come true” and we’re happy to make it happen.

Our North American shop, Lewis Off-road, is located at:

THE VENERABLE DISCO

The Land Rover Discovery was launched in 1989 as a mid market SUV. Designed for families and marketed as off-road capable, it was initially laughed off as a token grocery getter for suburban moms.

Land Rover, however, had an answer for the haters. That answer was the Camel Trophy, the ultimate endurance test of man and machine. The Discovery would go on to cut its teeth in the famous Camel Trophy events, becoming the vehicle of choice for the competition and eventually cementing itself as a legend in the automotive world.

With the drivetrain of a Defender and the refinement of a Range Rover, the Discovery quickly won over its naysayers. Its high sales volume boosted Land Rovers popularity so much that it can be attributed to saving the entire brand from failure.

The Discovery’s innovative design along with its functionality and comfort made it a huge success. The high stepped roof line, excellent visibility and alpine windows made driver and passengers alike feel as if they were on their own safari every time they got inside.

This spirit still captures us today.
